There is one woman on every pregnant celebrity’s speed dial – Dr Gowri Motha, the mother of all pregnancy gurus. So when Elle Macpherson hosted a party at Cecconi’s in London, to launch Dr Motha’s book Gentle Birth Method, the restaurant was swamped with grateful A-list mums and their babies. Guest including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss, Donna Air and novelist Santa Montefiore drank tea and picked at wheat-free sandwiches, muffins and cakes decorated with some of Dr Motha’s self-hypnosis mantras, such as “think elastic” (that’s the cervix she’s referring to). Her approach, about training the mind and the body, helps women have short, natural labours.

Paltrow said the holistic Ayurvedic method worked for her partly because of “the reflexology. That knocked me out completely. Gowri’s so intuitive”. Macpherson added, “She’s so reassuring. She was like the mother I didn’t have, as mine was in Australia.”

Santa Montefiore: “It’s really weird meeting up with all the mothers again, seeing the babies out, not in. I think Dr Motha is the best-kept word of mouth secret, until now.”

Donna Air: “I didn’t diet after I gave birth. I got my figure back so quickly just by running around after my little girl. It’s really knackering.”

Hello, 22 June, 2004

There was a time when ladies lunched, but lat week it was a mums and babies tea party – complete with sandwiches, cakes and a children’s entertainer – that proved the hottest ticket in town as Elle Macpherson invited her famous friends to help celebrate the launch of pregnancy book The Gentle Birth Method.Developed by obstetrician Dr Gowri Motha, the combination of diet, healing techniques, massage and visualisation has helped celebrity mums such as Kate Moss, Sharleen Spiteri, Lady Helen Taylor, Gwyneth Paltrow and, of course, Elle herself, sail through both pregnancy and childbirth. Many of the doctor’s devotees attended the party at chic London eaterie Cecconi’s. Kate Moss was there with her 20-month-old daughter Lila Grace, while Donna Air proudly showed off eight-month-old Freya. Gwyneth Paltrow also turned up to show her support, looking relaxed in a peach top and jeans. However she had left her most precious accessory – new baby Apple – at home.Hostess Elle, who attended with her youngest son Cy, has made no secret of her wish to have another baby and is keen to spread the word about Dr Motha’s techniques. “I had an incredibly positive, emotional, and nurturing birth,” she says. “Now I send all my girlfriends to Gowri as soon as they tell me they’re expecting."
